We Are The Sheffield College Students' Union

Students Union

We are The Sheffield College Students' Union; we represent every student at the college both locally and nationally. We represent your views to the college executive team, managers and staff led by our team of democratically elected students who meet weekly to voice, and act upon, your feedback.

Working together with The Sheffield College we aim to provide the best quality education and experience for all students and the local community.

Amy Smith is currently the President of the Students’ Union and has been elected to lead on a full-time basis. Amy is supported on the college’s governing body by the Student Governor and on the Union by 14 other part-time voluntary officers. We aim to provide services alongside those provided by the college and host events and stalls to gain awareness of issues we believe to be important.

Over the past few years we have done a lot! We re-launched four years ago and since then we have placed equality at the forefront of all we do, including:

  • Introducing Liberation Officers
  • Creating an LGBT Charter for students - the first ever in an FE college!
  • Working to defeat discrimination and stigma attached to mental health
  • Joined the NUS in campaigning against cuts to DSA

We’ve also won a few awards along the way:

  • President in 2012-13, Barbara Ntumy won the NUS Black Achievers Award for Equality in Education
  • Ben Walters (former Vice President) won the NUS LGBT Campaigner of the Year Award 2014
  • Runner-Up to the NUS FE Union of the Year 2014

In 2015 we worked with Sheffield University Students’ Union and Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union on numerous green projects like 'Sheffield on a Plate' and 'The Big Stew', promoting sustainability and green living. We also worked to ensure our students were registered to vote in the 2015 General Election. One of our biggest achievements was to sign The Sheffield College up to the 'Time to Change' pledge, committing both the college and the union to ending mental health discrimination.

Because of our affiliation to the National Union of Students, our students are eligible to buy a NUS extra card, which costs only £12 for 12 months, and offers fantastic savings at hundreds of shops, you can get one at www.nus.org.uk/extra or speak to one of our officers for more details.
