Work Placement

Why work experience?

As a student at The Sheffield College you are likely to complete an element of Work Experience as part of your Study Programme. The type of work experience you do and the time it will take will depend on what kind of course you are studying.

What's in it for me?

  • Improving your job prospects, gaining knowledge of the work place in variety of areas.
  • Increasing your employability skills such as communication, problem solving, social skills, self-management, commitment, enthusiasm, flexibility and team work.
  • Helping you during interviews and it looks impressive on your CV.
  • Helping you understand what motivates you and what you are passionate about.

When do I need to start thinking about it?

The College Work Placement Coordinators are here to help co-ordinate work experience placements for thousands of students each year.
Employers like students with initiative, so make a start, once you know your work experience dates. Look for employers in your chosen vocational subject area and make sure you are able to get there if they offer you a placement!

Don’t worry if you don’t find a placement - we can help.

What should I ask employers?

  • If you feel confident, telephone the employers
  • Tell them your name, what course you are studying and ask if they would consider offering you a work experience placement.
  • Discuss the dates you would like the placement.
  • They may invite you to visit so they can meet you. You’ll need to prepare for this.
  • Remember to ask the person you are speaking to for their name.
  • Give them your contact number.
