Enhance

Clubs, Trips & Societies

At The Sheffield College, we go further to ensure that you get the best learning and cultural experiences possible to enhance your time with us. Whether that's through visits to local art exhibitions and museums, guest speakers coming in to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, or visiting major industry leaders so you can see how they go further in the real world.

Recently, we’ve taken students to New York, Beijing, London, Berlin, Morocco, Iceland, Bruges, behind the scenes at East Midlands Airport and British Airways HQ, Whitby and even Florence in Italy.

We also know how important extra curricular activities are not only to your CV, but also when it comes to enjoying your time at college! There’s a club and society for almost everything, from chess through to our Media Society – perfect for pursuing hobbies new and old, and meeting like-minded people who share your passions. Remember, if we don’t have what you’re looking for, we’ll help you to set up your own!

Trips

A key part of your learning experience will be getting out of the classroom so that you can see how things operate in the real world and not just in your textbook!

Some trips will be local, drawing on our brilliant connections and partnerships with nearby businesses and taking advantage of Sheffield's hugely diverse range of talent. Recently our students have visited Whirlow Hall Farm (animal care), Sheffield Theatres (performing arts and music), Liberty Steel (engineering) and Rolls Royce (motor vehicle).

Other classes venture out nationally to visit leading institutions in their field. This year...

  • Our aviation and tourism students visited British Airways HQ in London, spending three days soaking up the company's history, touring their facilities and meeting some of their staff members
  • Games Design students headed to the NextGen showcase event in London to check out emerging technologies in the gaming industries
  • Motor vehicle students visited Silverstone to see some Formula 1 cars in action

Our students often find themselves further afield too, with visits recently including destinations such as New York, Beijing, Berlin, Morocco, Iceland, Bruges and even Florence in Italy.

Guest speakers and demonstrations

We appreciate that you might not be able to go on a trip every week, so we aim to bring the outside world in sometimes as well!

As many of our tutors have worked out in their chosen industry for many years before entering education, lots of them still have fantastic links with employers and professionals and invite them in to speak to our students.

Some of our recent guest speakers include:

  • Ella Burton (professional make-up artist and wig specialist) who delivered an incredible live wig and make-up demo to our hair and beauty students
  • Ash Henderson (professional chef); former student Ash joined some of our catering students to give them a masterclass in Japanese cooking, something he knows a lot about having lived and worked in Japan for nearly a decade!
  • Luke Ambler (former professional rugby player) spoke to a number of our sport students about his sporting career, and the importance of making strong life choices

Competitions and events

One of the best ways to develop your skills is to compete in national competitions. Not only will you learn to work as part of a team (often under pressure!), but you'll also be exposed to a huge variety of stimuli and inspiration from other competitors.

Recently our students have taken part in competitions and events such as...

  • WorldSkills UK
  • Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show at Chatsworth
  • Young Restaurant Team of the Year
  • Nestlé Professional Toque d’Or
