Why work experience?
As a student at The Sheffield College you are likely to complete an element of Work Experience as part of your Study Programme. The type of work experience you do and the time it will take will depend on what kind of course you are studying.
What's in it for me?
When do I need to start thinking about it?
The College Work Placement Coordinators are here to help co-ordinate work experience placements for thousands of students each year.
Employers like students with initiative, so make a start, once you know your work experience dates. Look for employers in your chosen vocational subject area and make sure you are able to get there if they offer you a placement!
Don’t worry if you don’t find a placement - we can help.
What should I ask employers?
You may be entitled to financial support whilst at College, just enquire at the Student Services reception on your campus.
If you are 16-18 years you are eligible to a pass that entitles you to cheaper bus and tram fares of 70p per journey. For more information on this and other types of student passes go to www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/studentpasses/
If you are over 18, you could also apply for a NUS Discount Card at www.nus.org.uk/

Health and Safety
Your health, safety and welfare whilst on work experience is important. You will be given information about this before you visit an employer.
Disclosure and Barring Service – DBS
If your work experience opportunity involves working around young children or vulnerable adults you may need a DBS Certificate. College staff will help with this – check with your tutor.
Get ahead, make it happen!
