Childcare Apprenticeship

This course is for learners who wish to work with children. You will gain knowledge and practical skills in caring for children.

As an apprentice, you will be working in an early years setting such as a nursery or pre-school. Some apprentices may work in a school in a foundation class. You will generally spend 4 days a week at work and one day in college. A typical day in the workplace will involve welcoming the children and helping them to settle in.

You will assist during meal times, snack times and nap time. Once you gain experience you will be responsible for setting up for play activities and helping to

plan them.

Course content

The day you are in college you will be working towards a Level 2 CACHE Diploma for the Children & Young People’s Workforce, which could lead to a level 3 apprenticeship course. You will study child development and cover important topics such as health and safety and safeguarding. You will develop knowledge of the Early Years Curriculum, the skills required to assess children’s development and plan learning activities to meet their individual needs. You will also look at equality, inclusion and team work.

Functional Skills qualifications in English, Maths and ICT will be delivered in college.

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs at A*-D (or acceptable alternatives) to include English Language, no lower than E in Maths.
  • DBS check

You are encouraged to look for your own placement once you have completed your interview with college. The College will help to find a suitable placement but the emphasis is on you.

Will this course suit me?

An ideal student for this course is one who has a mature and professional attitude for the workplace. You will need to have good time management skills and be punctual. It is an advantage to be self motivated and to able to work independently. You must be committed to working with children.

Where can it lead?

This is a professional qualification (or license to practice) which will enable you to seek employment in schools, private day care, pre-schools, or in relevant health and social care settings in positions of responsibility. Employment opportunities include working in Day Care, Crèches, Schools, Pre-School/Playgroups, Child minder’s own homes, Children’s centres or home childcare, Hospitals.

Please note: This qualification does not carry any UCAS points.
