Accounting & Accountancy Apprenticeship

If you are interested in becoming an Accountancy Professional without having the financial cost of university, then this apprenticeship could be for you.

About the Course

Due to the nature of the industry and of the course, it would best suit students working at a C grade in both Maths and English. This will help you to secure a suitable work placement and be successful on the course.

Key Units

You will study for a Level 2 AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Certificate in Accounting and then the following year, if you do well, you could move onto the Level 3 Accounting and Finance Apprenticeship.

If you have already completed an A level in Accounting or Level 2 AAT, you can progress directly onto the Level 3 AAT Apprenticeship.

The AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) is a professional body that specialises in Accounting Technician training and development, and can lead you onto the route to becoming a fully qualified and chartered accountant. You will study basic accounting including working effectively in accounting and finance, basic costing, computerised accounting and professional ethics in accounting and finance.

Accountants keep track of companies and individuals’ finances so they can manage their money properly. Depending on a client’s needs, you might produce account reports, forecast future profits, calculate tax or audit accounts. You’ll learn how to balance accounts, process invoices and payments, complete VAT returns, and help prepare financial statements and reports.

Every business has a finance function so you could be working for an accounting firm or in the accounts or finance department of a small or large business.

The course consists of four and half days a week in the work place and half a day a week attendance at college. If you need to complete Functional Skills qualifications, these will be delivered in college in the first year of the course.

You are encouraged to look for your own placement once you have completed your interview with college. The college will help to find a suitable placement but the emphasis is on you.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at A*-D or acceptable alternatives, must include English Language and Maths. You will also need to gain a suitable employer.

Assessment

You will be assessed by AAT unit tests which are mostly computer based.

Where does this Lead

This course is specifically designed for those wishing to pursue a career in finance/ accounting. The course offers a route into employment or progression to the level 3 Apprenticeship to do the Level 3 diploma in Accounting. Depending on your aspirations this could be a pathway to becoming a fully qualified and chartered accountant without the need to go to University.

These qualifications are internationally recognised and will provide you with opportunities to work in several countries around the world, as well as in the UK.
