Business BTEC Level 3 Diploma

If you are interested in a future career and higher education related to business and management this could be the course for you. You will learn all about the exciting world of business and have the opportunity to apply your learning in a practical and realistic way.


About the Course

You will develop your skills and knowledge of different aspects of business which can also help you decide which business career or higher education course you want to move into.


Key Units

Over the two year programme, Level 3 Extended Diploma students will complete 18 units of study and Level 3 Diploma students will complete 12 units of study from a range of business areas.

You will develop your knowledge of and gain a broad business experience in:

  • The different types of businesses and how they are organised
  • How the different resources needed to make businesses work efficiently are managed e.g. workforce and finance
  • The tools and techniques used in modern marketing
  • The different types of communication techniques used in business
  • Understanding financial information
  • Creative product promotion concepts, to include the design of a promotional campaign
  • The role of the internet in modern marketing
  • Managing people
  • How to set up your own business
A range of learning methods are used including practical assignments, discussions, presentations and the use of computer-based virtual learning environments. Through this you will develop a wide range of skills including, presentation skills, independent learning skills, IT skills, team working and leadership skills.

On your programme you will also study for Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and English qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade C.

Course enrichment activities include: 

  • A team building exercise in the Peak District allowing students and staff to get to know one another.
  • Visits to local and national organisations are arranged. 
  • You will also get the chance to meet and talk to local business people about their jobs and businesses. 
  • There may also be the opportunity to go on business events abroad.

Assessment

BTEC courses are assessed mostly by course work including practical assignments, discussions and presentations. Coursework will be based around practical business exercises and you will be encouraged to utilise your own experiences of business you may have developed through part-time work or work placements. There may also be some exams.


Where does this Lead

The majority of students progress on to a degree or foundation degree in a wide range of subjects such as business, marketing, IT, accountancy, teaching or law. Alternatively students could enter employment in various areas of business such as accounts and finance, human resources, local government, logistics, marketing or retailing.

Staff and facilities:
You will learn from experienced, specialised and enthusiastic business teachers with a range of academic and business work backgrounds. You will have access to up-to-date IT facilities and course resources on the college intranet which can be accessed at home. Business Advisers at the college can also give support and advice to students who would like to develop their own business ideas. All this experience and knowledge is brought together at Hillsborough College to make business studies exciting and relevant to today's business world.

Qualification Title: Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma Business which is accepted for entry to university and carries UCAS Tariff points equivalent to 2 A levels.
