Dental Nursing Apprenticeship Level 3

This course is a training programme suitable if you would like to be a Dental Nurse. A dental nurse provides ‘chair-side support’ for the dental team which includes dentists, dental therapists, hygienists and technicians.


About the Course

This course is a training programme suitable if you like to be a Dental Nurse. A dental nurse provides 'chair-side support' for the dental team, which includes dentists, dental therapists, hygienists and technicians.

As an apprentice, you will be working as a Dental Nurse in a general dental practice, undertaking a variety of supervised tasks. Your duties will be to support the dentist in all aspects of patient care, this includes getting the appropriate instruments ready, mixing materials and ensuring patient comfort. You will learn about taking notes from the dentist's dictation for records. Your role will also include decontaminating the surgery the instruments and possible helping with reception work, making appointments, taking payments, dealing with paperwork and meeting and reassuring patients.

The day you are in college you will be working towards a City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing. The course consists of a minimum of 30 hours per week, which includes one day a fortnight attendance at college.


Key Units

You will study a wide range of related units including Dental Anatomy, Oral Diseases, Medical Emergencies, Dental Radiography and Sterilisation. you will learn about oral health promotion and preventative dentistry techniques. Some units will focus on patient care and management and you will cover legal and ethical issues as well as Health and Safety.

Where does this Lead

Once trained, Dental Nurses can progress into other career pathways such as Dental Therapists and Hygienists, Oral Health Promotion, Dental Practice Management or related Healthcare roles.
