Derma Rolling & Foundation Awards Level 4

This is a modular qualification that consists of a number of separate courses covering advanced practical skills and knowledge relating to skin science. The course is ideally suited to a wide range of people as it combines both online theory-based learning and practical face to face learning at the college.


About the Course

This is a modular qualification that consists of a number of separate courses covering advanced practice skills and knowledge:

Level 4 Award in Advanced Skin Science

This award is designed for both medical and therapy practitioners and will equip you with the advanced knowledge of skin anatomy and physiology required to give you a deeper knowledge of normal skin function and skin dysfunction, preparing you for working more effectively with all skin conditions and Clinical Aesthetic treatments. It is a five module knowledge only programme using the unique online audio visual format, to give complete flexibility.

Level 4 Award in Investigative Consultation and Advanced Skin Assessment

This award is a seven module training programme that has been designed to address the need for better informed and in-depth consultation and intricate skin assessment skills to facilitate a long term and holistic approach to skin health, together with advanced diagnostic skills of cosmetic dermatological conditions. This is a knowledge only programme using the unique online audio visual format, to give complete flexibility.

Level 4 Award in the Physiology and Practice of Dermal Rollering

This course follows the delivery method outlined below: 1. Underpinning Knowledge

Delivered through a bespoke on-line, audio-visual system that allows you to learn at your own pace and convenience. You will receive a portfolio with all the course materials in hard copy. This is your personal resource in which you can make notes giving you a permanent copy to look back on. This element has been designed to ensure all learners have the opportunity to refresh core knowledge at the same time as being introduced to new treatments prior to the practical days. You will study the following units:

• Anatomy and Physiology relevant to treatment - Advanced skin structure and physiology, histology, keratinisation, the papillary and reticular layers of the dermis. The relevance of the ECM ,sensory receptors and relevance for treatment. The healing mechanism and implication for treatment, including the process of collagen synthesis and fibroblastic action. Types of Collagen and Collagen synthesis, remodeling, degradation and glycation. Elastin synthesis and degradation. The ageing process and contributory factors. Hormones affecting the skin and issues influencing skin healing capacity; principles of the circulatory and lymphatic systems

• Legislation - A study of the legislation relevant for practice protocol and business operations

• Health and Safety - Hygiene, sterilization, disinfection, hazardous waste and best practice protocol

• Pricing, service times, registration & insurance

• Products, tools & equipment - Roller types and needle sizes. Dermal stamps and Dermapen. Cosmeceutical preparations such as Retinols, Growth Factors and Antioxidants which can used during the clinical procedure or for aftercare to fortify treatment results

• Preparation - Preparation of the treatment area and equipment including hygiene protocol, sterilization & disinfection

• Consultation and treatment planning - Communication reflective of disability and discrimination legislation. Methods - verbal, written, electronic, taking photographs. Contraindications that prevent, restrict and require GP approval. Possible contra-actions and side effects. Describing the treatment. Informed consent

• Skin analysis - Skin types & the Fitzpatrick scale. Skin tests.

• Practice protocols

• After care & recording protocol

2. Practical

Assessment of practical skill competency takes places in the Beauty Therapy Department at the Sheffield College campus, over one day. The practical skills covered, includes the use of dermal rollers of different needle lengths and the use of the dermal stamp.

The aim of this day is to review key elements of underpinning knowledge in the practical setting and enable practice treatments to take place:

• Introductions & review of core knowledge

• Client consultation and assessment of the skin and review of conditions to be treated & those requiring GP approval - To include a review of the healing mechanism, normal reactions, adverse reactions to treatment & after care protocol

• Practical demonstration and delegate practice

• Practical skill development & assessment - Delegates will carry out a consultation, treatment on clients adapting for all client needs and differences & give after treatment advise. This work will be tutor guided with a view to skill competency and assessment being achieved during the session. Delegates will use skin rollers and

stamps of a size suited to their client’s skin condition

• Case Study - delegates will be required to submit a documentary case study in evidence of their on going practice

This is suitable for many groups of people as the course is delivered to you through a combination of on-line learning for the knowledge based elements for ease of study, and face to face practical delivery at The Sheffield College.

You can enrol on almost any day of the year, and proceed through the knowledge based elements in your own time. Practical assessment days can be booked upon successful completion of the Multiple Choice Questions and written assessments as the end of the knowledge based modules.
