Entry Requirements
Students progressing from school are expected to have a Grade ā€™Dā€™ in GCSE English. In addition, prior to the start of the course, some applicants may be directed to sit an initial assessment, writing in English, to enable tutors to determine their suitability. Some may require a year of Functional Skills English first. Applications from mature students with a lower GCSE grade, or no previous attempts are welcome.
 
 

English GCSE

This course is completed over one year. Wherever you study GCSE English Language, the course requirements are the same.


Key Units

It will involve four essays and three oral activities in the areas of reading, writing and speaking and listening. 

Writing

  • Descriptive writing
  • Narrative Writing
Reading
  • Response to a work of literary fiction
  • Analysis of a spoken language transcript
Oral activities include:
  • Group discussion
  • Paired work 
  • Individual presentation.
Exams
  • Two exams (60% of the total mark).
There is one final written exam in June split into two consecutive one hour papers - reading & writing.

Government regulations specify that coursework is now conducted under supervised conditions in college.


Where does this Lead

Employment, where a minimum GCSE grade 'C' is required. Entry to a wide range of Advanced/Level 3 vocational and academic courses. Further study of English Literature or Language at AS or Access level.
