Extended Diploma in Performing Arts Technical Theatre & Stage Management Level 3

This is an exciting and mainly practical course. It is project based and you will learn to produce, support and manage a variety of productions for live performance. You will work as part of a team facilitating all the live performances in the Performing Arts department. You will be introduced to all areas of technical theatre and stage management in the first year of your course and then you will be able to specialise in your 2nd year if this is appropriate for your career path.

About the Course

There is a continuous assignment process involving practical, research and presentation work. Written work is in the form of assignments, individual portfolios, journals and research reports. There is a mix of practical classes with some theory and will suit you if you are willing and eager to learn and to get hands on with performance projects. You’ll get to use our excellent facilities and be a part of live performances in a professional theatre.

The course will not only help you develop your knowledge and understanding of every aspect of the Production Arts Industry but it will help your communication skills and should give you confidence in working both on your own and with others. These are skills that you can apply whatever you decide to do after you have finished the course .You will also be able to carry out research and reflect with thought and perception on your own working practices.

The Production Arts department is based at Hillsborough College in a new purpose-built Creative Arts Centre fully equipped to professional standards. The facilities have been specially designed and equipped to give you the best possible environment in which to learn about the industry.

The Btec course is extremely well established and many of our previous students are now working successfully within the industry in production and design. You will be taught by tutors who have strong links with specialists and companies both locally and nationally, and the team includes tutors who themselves have worked in the industry.

Hillsborough college itself is college is a bright and friendly college with excellent facilities and good public transport links.

During your course you will be working in the evenings on a number of occasions. This is because you will be working on several performances over the year. You are given a year planner at the start of the course to enable you to ensure that you are able to prioritise college commitments and participate fully in all projects.

Visits to theatres will be organised during your course and you are encouraged to see as much live performance as possible in order to help you understand the importance of technical theatre and stage management in production.

You will need to wear appropriate clothes when attending college as you will be taking part in practical sessions where this is essential.

Future Opportunities

Most students go on to do a degree or foundation degree, at a University or a Production course at a drama school. A significant number of ex-students are now working successfully in the T.V, Film and Theatre. Other students have formed their own companies. While some students progress onto courses in the production arts, students do also go on to degree courses in a wide range of other areas where artistic understanding and communication skills are important, including Hospitality and Events Management, Tourism and Nursing.
