Fashion & Clothesmaking

This course offers candidates the opportunity to develop basic/intermediate sewing skills in all aspects of fashion and clothes making although progress will depend on individuals' own ability. It will introduce candidates to equipment and materials used in this particular craft.


Key Units

During the course you will have the opportunity to develop skills, expertise and knowledge in the following:

  • Health and Safety aspects of using workshops and equipment 
  • Use of sewing machine and overlocker 
  • Understanding commercial patterns 
  • Measuring and estimating 
  • Adaptations and fitting patterns to individual sizes, based on individual progress
  • Understanding and working with fabrics 
  • Cutting and fitting first garments 
  • Folder to record work in progress and skills achieved 
  • The fashion industry

This course is offered on a part-time basis. Candidates undertaking the programme will normally be required to attend the centre for two and a half hours per week for 30 weeks. Subject to equipment requirement, you may be expected to undertake work outside timetabled classes. 


This is a full cost course. No funding available.

You may be required to provide certain items of equipment and materials, details of which will be discussed during your first session, however, this is likely to include:

  • Sharp scissors for cutting fabric
