About the Course

This unique course in Financial Management involves three areas of study: Accounting, Financial Services and a more general Business Studies qualification. Over the two years you will progress from foundation to advanced level with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and the IFS University College.

An ideal student for this course is one who is motivated and has an interest in mathematics and numbers. You will like this course if you have enjoyed subjects such as Business & Economics at school.

Key Units

This unique course in Financial Management involves three areas of study: 
  • Accounting
  • Financial Services
  • General Business Studies qualification. 
Over the two years you will progress from foundation to advanced level with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and the IFS University College

In the first year you will be introduced to many aspects of finance and accounting. You will start with basic financial management techniques and processes such as book keeping, costing, petty cash books, ledgers, and basic banking procedures. During the first year you will complete the Business Studies certificate too.

During the second year you will work at a more advanced level studying accounting techniques and principles such as drafting financial statements, drafting budgets, and measuring financial performance. The Financial Studies side of the course will cover services such as the credit industry and the pensions industry.

Depending on demand, there will be a trip to London to visit the IFS University College campus in the heart of the financial district. We will visit the Stock Exchange and have a tour of Europe’s financial capital.



Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at A*-C or acceptable alternatives, must include English Language and Mathematics (Mathematics preferably at a B to cope with the demands of the course)


Assessment

You will be assessed in Financial Studies units by written examinations and the Acounting units will be mostly computer based examinations. The Business units are assessed entirely through coursework and assignments.

You will gain four qualifications by the end of the second year: 

  • Level 3 Diploma in Accounting AAT
  • Level 3 Diploma in Financial Studies IFS
  • Level 3 Certificate in Business BTEC
  • Level 2 Certificate in Accounting AAT


Where does this Lead

Financial Management is a growing area. We believe this course will stand you in good stead to gain employment with internationally recognised and respected qualifications.

All businesses need people with financial knowledge. Most medium and large sized organisations have finance departments which need employees with finance and accounting skills. IFS qualifications stand you in good stead to go directly into the world of banking, insurance and financial services.

You could progress to a Level 4 Diploma in Accounting which could also lead to becoming a chartered accountant. There are also qualifications such as Certificate in Mortgage Advice (CeMAP), and the Level 4 Diploma for Financial Advisors (DipFA) or you could go into Higher Education in finance and accounting or banking and financial services. Sheffield College offers a foundation degree in Business.

AAT qualifications lead to job roles that include purchasing officers, book keeping officers, computerised accounting technicians, and general accounting technician. Jobs in the financial services sector which would be suitable are retail banking assistant, retail bank trainee manager, credit sales and further financial servicesThe course is assessed in a variety of ways.
