What you will do each week
Each week your tutor will direct you to work through a particular section of the online resources. The online resources are written to a very high standard. They have been specially designed for this online course and cover everything you need to know to be successful in your studies. They can be accessed through Moodle, which is a learning platform. When you have completed key pieces of work you will send your work to your tutor who will mark it and offer you feedback and advice on how you can improve. For other pieces of work you will be directed to the answers and be able to check your work for yourself. Your tutor will always be there to help you if something is not clear or if you need support.

Online study is not for everyone
You will be working through online materials on your own but with good support from our tutors. We have a better than average success rates for online students.

Those who enjoy it say they do so because:
  • They can learn in their own way
  • They often have excellent relationships with a tutor who guides them through the course materials and explains things to them individually
  • They are free to choose any time in the week to study, so they can fit in study between work, caring for children and other commitments
  • They are very used to using computers and technology and have good access to broadband and relevant software (Word, email etc)
We expect you to study regularly. This is because:
  • For most, passing Functional Skills in one year demands regular study, including regularly practise of the required skills.
  • Sending your work in regularly means that you can put into practice any tips or feedback the tutor may have to offer
  • The relationship with the teacher is at the heart of our course.  Teachers will understand if there are genuine and unforeseen difficulties, and help to guide students through them and to catch up, but cannot be expected to cope with receiving no work for 3 weeks and then 4 weeks work at once
  • Online study can be an enjoyable and rewarding way to learn and it will also help you improve your online and IT skills
