About the Course

The Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is made up of 18 study units and the Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 Diploma is made up of 12 study units.

The Extended Diploma programme will also include an introduction to counselling skills, dealing with challenging behaviour, caring for older people and research project skills.

Work experience is a compulsory part of the course. The one day a week placement, arranged with you, is tailored to your future employment or higher education progression. Students usually work in nurseries, schools, nursing homes and day centres; hospital placements are limited. All level 3 students must wear a course placement uniform while at their work placement.

On your programme you will study for English and Maths qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade C. There is also the opportunity to study for additional awards such as first aid.

You will be required to devote time outside of taught classes to produce coursework such as assignments, written reports and presentations to set deadlines.

Course enrichment includes a range of trips, visits and activities to support coursework and career/higher education progression. These may include a major incident triage care experience with the NHS and fire service. Visits are arranged to places such as health centres, Alton Towers (linked to health and safety), secure hospitals (linked to mental health awareness), the Houses of Parliament (linked to equality and diversity) and London Medical Museums (linked to anatomy and physiology).

Assessment

BTEC Health and Social Care courses are assessed mostly by course work however there will also be some exams. Assessment methods include written assignments, worksheets, role plays, practical assessments, observations, photographic records and workbooks.

Health and social care is one of the largest industry sectors and offers a huge choice of careers. Students who successfully complete this course can apply to university/higher education courses. Past students have gone on to careers and higher education courses in nursing, social work, early childhood studies, occupational therapy, youth and community work, operating department practitioner, applied social sciences, psychology and sociology.
