This apprenticeship course develops the knowledge and practical/technical skills for those working as an apprentice in the horticultural industry.
Horticulture apprentices are based with an employer 4 days a week and attend college 1 day a week on a day release basis for knowledge, portfolio building and assessments.
The college has links with horticultural employers and will try to place apprentices in employment, however this cannot be guaranteed so we advise applicants to look for their own employer.
You will learn about, ground preparation and planting, pruning shrubs and trees, clearing garden sites and re-landscaping, turf management, health and safety, using and maintaining horticultural tools and machinery, working in glasshouses and hard landscaping e.g. concreting and making raised beds and working as part of a team.
In addition to your horticulture qualification you will also study about employee rights and responsibilities and for qualifications in English and Maths if you have not already gained a minimum GCSE grade C.
4 GCSEs at A*-D grades (or acceptable alternatives) including English Language with Maths no lower than an E. You will also need to gain a suitable employer.
The course is assessed by the gathering of work-based evidence into a portfolio. In addition to a portfolio assessment you will undertake short written tests, on-going practical assessments.
Successful Level 2 students continuing in employment can progress to our Level 3 Horticulture Apprenticeship programme.
