Entry Requirements
5 GCSEs at A*-C grades (or acceptable alternatives) including English Language with Maths no lower than a D and Level 2 Horticultur. You will also need to gain suitable employment.
 
 

Horticulture Apprenticeship Level 3

This apprenticeship course develops the knowledge and practical/technical skills for those working as an apprentice in the horticultural industry.


About the Course

Horticulture apprentices are based with an employer 4 days a week and attend college 1 day a week on a day release basis for knowledge, portfolio building and assessments.

The college has links with horticultural employers and will try to place apprentices in employment, however this cannot be guaranteed so we advise applicants to look for their own employer.


Key Units

You will learn about:


  • Ground preparation and planting
  • Pruning shrubs and trees
  • Clearing garden sites and re-landscaping
  • Turf management
  • Health and safety
  • Using and maintaining horticultural tools and machinery
  • Working in glasshouses
  • Hard landscaping e.g. concreting and making raised beds and working as part of a team

In addition to your horticulture qualification you will also study for qualifications in English and maths if you have not already gained a minimum GCSE grade C.

Assessment

The course is assessed by the gathering of work-based evidence into a portfolio. In addition to a portfolio assessment you will undertake short written tests, complete assignments for all units and undertake on-going practical assessments.


Where does this Lead

Successful students may continue in employment or progress to higher education on a Horticulture based programme of study.

Staff and Facilities
You will learn from staff with a range of horticulture qualifications and backgrounds. The excellent facilities, which have been constructed during 2014, include the latest industry standard workshops, new fully automated glasshouses, horticultural equipment and machinery.

Will the course suit me?
This course is suitable for those who wish to gain a horticultural qualification while in employment and develop their careers within the industry. You will need to be practically minded, like working outdoors in all seasons and able to undertake a range of horticultural tasks including lifting and moving, ground preparation and planting. You also need to be prepared to do some study in your own time.


Qualification Title: 
The qualification will form part of the Apprenticeship framework for Horticulture and you will gain a City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture.
