This apprenticeship course develops the knowledge and practical/technical skills for those working as an apprentice in the horticultural industry.
Horticulture apprentices are based with an employer 4 days a week and attend college 1 day a week on a day release basis for knowledge, portfolio building and assessments.
The college has links with horticultural employers and will try to place apprentices in employment, however this cannot be guaranteed so we advise applicants to look for their own employer.
You will learn about:
5 GCSEs at A*-C grades (or acceptable alternatives) including English Language with Maths no lower than a D and Level 2 Horticultur. You will also need to gain suitable employment.
The course is assessed by the gathering of work-based evidence into a portfolio. In addition to a portfolio assessment you will undertake short written tests, complete assignments for all units and undertake on-going practical assessments.
Successful students may continue in employment or progress to higher education on a Horticulture based programme of study.
Staff and Facilities
You will learn from staff with a range of horticulture qualifications and backgrounds. The excellent facilities, which have been constructed during 2014, include the latest industry standard workshops, new fully automated glasshouses, horticultural equipment and machinery.
Will the course suit me?
This course is suitable for those who wish to gain a horticultural qualification while in employment and develop their careers within the industry. You will need to be practically minded, like working outdoors in all seasons and able to undertake a range of horticultural tasks including lifting and moving, ground preparation and planting. You also need to be prepared to do some study in your own time.
