Lab Technician Apprenticeship Level 3

Laboratory technicians support scientists to complete research and experiments. As a Lab Technician Apprentice, you could be working in industry, hospital or school setting. You could be involved in medical research, environmental experiments or testing new products for the market place. You will be working towards a Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Laboratory & Associated Technical Skills (LATA), which will be assessed in the workplace by a qualified assessor.


About the Course

The course is a training programme leading to becoming a qualified Laboratory Technician.

Laboratory technicians support scientists to complete research and experiments. As a Lab Technician apprentice, you could be working in industry, hospital or school setting. You could be involved in medical research, environmental experiments or testing new products for the market place. You will be working towards a Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Laboratory & Associated Technical Skills (LATA), which will be assessed in the workplace by a qualified assessor.

The day that you will be in college you will work towards a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science.  The course consists of a minimum of 30 hours per week in a laboratory environment which includes one day a week attendance at college.


Key Units

The nature of the work would depend on your employer. You will probably be [art of a team working alongside other scientist or technicians in the workplace. You might be involved in setting up experiments for students, collecting and analysing samples or preparing cultures or specimens. You might be responsible for disposing of chemicals, ordering and controlling laboratory stock and supplies and making sure that laboratory equipment is clean and in good working order.

During your Apprenticeship you will learn about the fundamentals of science, pick up practical skills and attend a qualification in applied science.

Assessment

You will build a portfolio of evidence to support the task you complete in the workplace.
