Legal Executive (Professional) Level 3

A mixture of academic legal rigour and practical legal application skills, this two year full time course will prepare the would-be lawyer for a career in the legal profession.

About the Course

The course components all combine to make you a marketable recruitment commodity. It also provides a progression pathway onto university to study law.

This programme can be used as the first academic stage of qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive and gives Associate Status to students who successfully complete it, if exemptions are applied for. As such it constitutes the first rung on the ladder to becoming qualified. You may also use it as a stepping stone for university study as it provides full UCAS points for applications to study law at university.

Key Units

Course content:

Year 1-

The first year syllabus for the CILEx Technical Diploma covers three mandatory units:
  • Introduction to Law Legal Skills
  • Practical Legal Skills
  • Law of Crime

Alongside this you will study the first three units from the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Law, where you apply your knowledge of dispute solving and law making, as well as aspects of civil and criminal liability, to a variety of scenarios. You also complete a unit in Family Law.

You will complete a series of coursework assignments to demonstrate your understanding of the underpinning legal concepts and processes. You will also complete an introductory Project (at Level 2) on a legal topic of your choosing.

Year 2-
You continue your legal studies by completing the remaining three units from the Technical Diploma. These are:
  • Law of Tort
  • Law of Contract
  • Property and Land Law

You will also sit a 10-hour synoptic assessment, over a period of one week, which will assess your overall knowledge and understanding from the entire programme of study.

You continue your BTEC studies with additional units in Consumer Law and Employment Law.

You also complete an Extended Project/Dissertation in Law & Practice, equivalent to one AS Level, on a legal topic of your choice, building on the skills you acquired in the first year’s introductory project.

The full course is the equivalent to 2.5 A levels and provides enough UCAS points for most degrees at university.

You will complete a 2-week placement within a local law firm, which the college will organise for you.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at A*-C or acceptable alternatives, must include English Language and preferably Maths.
