Legal Diploma in Law & Practice CILEx

The CILEx Professional Diploma in Law & Practice is the first stage of qualifying as a legal executive and is a one year evening course, following on from the Certificate in Law & Practice. Completion of the full Professional Diploma at Level 3 confers 'Associate' (ACILEx) status.

About the Course

The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) is the professional association which represents more than 20,000 trainee and practicing Chartered Legal Executives.

Chartered Legal Executive lawyers are fee earners. In private practice, their work is charged directly to clients, making a direct contribution to the income of a law firm.

Depending upon which area of law they work in, Chartered Legal Executive lawyers may handle the legal aspects of a property transfer, be involved in actions in the High courts/County Courts, draft wills, draw up documents to assist in the formation of a company, or advise husbands and wives with matrimonial problems; or clients accused of serious/petty crime.

The full Level 3 Professional Diploma at The Sheffield College provides a broad yet detailed programme of study across the three main areas of legal practice: property law and practice, civil and criminal litigation. Students can then choose to specialise in a particular area of law and practice on the Higher Professional Diploma at Level 6.

This course is delivered over four hours per week, typically on a Tuesday evening (5-9pm).

Key Units

There are many CILEx units from which to choose, but The Sheffield College Diploma provision includes the following CILEx units:

Unit 2: Contract Law
Unit 4: Land Law
Unit 5: Law of Tort
Unit 9: Civil Litigation
Unit 10: Conveyancing Practice

These units build on the 5 units which students will have achieved through study in Year 1, thus progressing from the Certificate to the Diploma in Year 2.

Entry Requirements

Entry to the Professional Diploma requires successful completion of the Level 3 Certificate.

You may still be able to enrol if you have a maximum of one resit examination to take from the first year, which must be taken at the next available opportunity (usually January).

Assessment

Units 2, 4 and 5: Closed book examination (1.5 hours)

Units 9 and 10: Closed book examination based on pre-released case study (1.5 hours)

Where does this Lead

Students successfully completing the Certificate and subsequent Diploma in Law & Practice at Level 3 will be eligible to progress to Level 6. A number of specialist subjects from the CILEx portfolio will be offered (this may vary each year to accommodate demand).

With extended rights of audience in civil, criminal and family proceedings, those Fellows who train and qualify as Legal Executive Advocates can represent their clients in the County Court, Family Proceedings Court and in most Tribunals, depending on the area of law in which they practice.

Chartered Legal Executive lawyers have the option to become solicitors in one or two years after becoming Fellows and are usually exempt from the training contracts graduates must complete in order to qualify as solicitors. However, new emerging rights means that the role and standing of Chartered Legal Executive lawyers and solicitors is moving ever closer.

  • Legal practice
  • Legal department of a private company or in local/national government

Professional Registration

All students enrolling for this course must become professional members of CILEx. The cost of this is in addition to course fees and payable by you directly to CILEx. The fee for 2016-17 was £185.

Professional membership is mandatory and must be completed by 9 October 2017.

If you are continuing from the Level 3 Certificate, then your current membership will lapse on 31 December 2017 and you will be required to renew this as a condition of your continuing your studies at the college.

Extra Costs

Professional membership fees to CILEx (please see above).

Those learners who are aged 19+ will be eligible to apply for a Student Loan. However, current government funding means there will usually be a shortfall, so you should expect to pay between £400-500 towards your fees out of your own funds. Payment plans can be put into place with the college finance team to help spread the cost of this.
