Marketing Apprenticeship Level 3

The Marketing Apprenticeship is a dynamic programme of study for anyone wishing to gain the knowledge, skills and practical experience of working within a marketing role. Marketing should be at the heart of all business enterprise: without it, customers would not know about a business’ products or services. Businesses would also not know how to tailor its products and/or services to specific customer groups.


About the Course

Depending on the size of the organisation, the role of the apprentice will vary, but it is anticipated that in smaller organisations the apprentice will work closely with the management and duties may go beyond marketing to include general administration as well. In larger organisations, the apprentice will usually work within a distinct marketing department and will work on a number of projects and campaigns.


Key Units

Apprentices will spend one day a week at The Sheffield City College developing their marketing knowledge and skills, by completing a Specialist Certificate in Principles of Marketing. 


This course is centred on the key unit of Marketing Theory which looks at market segmentation, the value of marketing and how to adopt socially responsible marketing practices. Additional units include the legal, regulatory and ethical considerations when marketing a product or service as well as the general behaviours expected of a marketing assistant within the business environment. The specialist unit covers the principles of digital marketing, in particular how to use search engines when conducting market research and social media to promote a business.

The remainder of the week will be spent working within an organisation in a marketing role, allowing apprentices to apply their knowledge and skills learned within the classroom to their particular business environment. Apprentices will receive regular visits from an NVQ Assessor who will guide and assess the apprentice’s practical competencies via an additional NVQ qualification in Marketing. There is much greater choice of study units within the NVQ, allowing the apprentice and the employer to select units which are most appropriate to the specific job responsibilities of the apprentice.

The programme of study also includes Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT, depending on an apprentice’s prior achievements in these subjects.

You will need passion, energy and enthusiasm, a ‘can do’ attitude and able to think creatively. Employers will be looking for apprentices who are willing to learn and take on new challenges and who can make a positive contribution to the running of the business.

You are encouraged to look for your own placement once you have completed your interview with college. The college will help to find a suitable placement but the emphasis is on you.
