Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 2

This level 2 qualification covers the technical needs for today’s motor vehicle repair industry, including the diagnosis of non-complex system faults.


About the Course

The course provides essential knowledge for service technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.


Key Units

You will study both the theory and practical aspects of the following: 

  • Carrying out routine vehicle maintenance
  • Removing and replacing engine units and components
  • Electrical auxiliary units and components
  • Chassis units and components
You also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Theory lessons covering the required technology are classroom based, giving you the opportunity for taking notes to aid your studies. Practical lessons take place in the motor vehicle workshops and give you the opportunity to develop the skills needed to pass the assessments. 

You will need to bring your own overalls and safety boots for workshop sessions; all other safety equipment will be provided. You need to attend regularly and be on time for every lesson.

Functional Skills lessons also form an important part of your course. They include Maths, English and ICT to help you improve your skills in these areas. 

The course is approximately 50% theory and 50% practical. Your progress will be reviewed regularly in tutorial sessions

You are expected to study independently in your own time, building up your knowledge of motor vehicle technology.

You will be given passwords for our online learning materials. We have a comprehensive library for you to read suitable textbooks on the subject. Recommended reading is:

  • Advanced Vehicle Technology - Heisler

Level 1 Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent, and a minimum of Entry 3 Functional Skills.

Where does this Lead

Following success in this course you can apply to join a Level 3 Maintenance and Repair course. The qualification is also the Technical Certificate part of an Apprenticeship. Career opportunities include working in motor vehicle repair establishments or fast fit outlets as a repair technician or parts specialist.

Students should apply through the internal progression system with the help of their Tutor Mentor. Progression forms must be signed by your tutor.
