Pharmacy Apprenticeship Level 2

This course is a work based training programme leading to a qualification which will allow you to work in a Hospital or Community pharmacy as a Pharmacy assistant.


About the Course

This course is a work based training programme leading to a qualification which will allow you to work in a Hospital or Community pharmacy as a Pharmacy assistant.

As an apprentice, you will be working as a Trainee Pharmacy Assistant either in a hospital or community pharmacy, undertaking a variety of supervised tasks within the pharmacy. Your duties will vary depending on the setting, but may include selling over-the-counter medicines under supervision, dispensing prescriptions, generating labels, Aseptic production, ordering and storing pharmaceutical stock, and providing information on symptoms and products to customers. 

The course consists of a minimum of 30 hours per week in a pharmacy environment.

Qualification Titles

BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Pharmaceutical Science
NVQ Level 2 Certificate in Pharmacy Service Skills


You will be working towards a level 2 NVQ Certificate in Pharmacy Service Skills which will be assessed at the workplace by a qualified assessor. You will study 7 units.

There are 3 mandatory units, relating to Health and Safety, Communication, and team working within the Pharmacy, and 4 optional units, relating to your role in the work place. 

You will also work towards a Level 2 BTEC Certificate in Pharmaceutical Science. You will study 6 units. There are 3 mandatory units, relating to Health and Safety, Communication, and team working within the Pharmacy, and 3 optional units, relating to your role in the work place.


Assessment

Assessment for both courses is continuous throughout the course in the workplace.
For the NVQ You will build a portfolio of evidence to support the tasks you complete at the workplace to demonstrate you can complete tasks safely and use knowledge gained.

For the BTEC you will complete work books containing modules of study and multiple choice questions.  Assignments, relating to the work books, will be given to you by the assessor after you have completed the work books.


Where does this Lead

There is the opportunity to progress to the Level 3 Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship.


Future Opportunities

You will be able to work as a Pharmacy assistant in either a hospital or Community Pharmacy.
You will work under the supervision of the Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technicians.
You will be involved in dispensing medicines, selling over the counter medicines and giving advice to patients.
You could work in medicine stores in hospitals ensuring medicine stocks are up to date, stored appropriately and delivered to wards.
