Pharmacy Apprenticeship Level 3

This course is a training programme leading to becoming a registered Pharmacy Technician. Upon successful completion of the qualification you will be required to register with The General Pharmaceutical Council.


About the Course

This course is a training programme leading to becoming a registered Pharmacy Technician. Upon successful completion of the qualification you will be required to register with The General Pharmaceutical Council.

As an apprentice you will be working as a Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technician either in a hospital or community pharmacy, undertaking a variety of supervised tasks within the pharmacy. Your duties will vary depending on the setting, but may include selling over-the-counter medicines under supervision, dispensing prescriptions, generating labels, Aseptic production, ordering and storing pharmaceutical stock, providing information on symptoms and products to customers. You will be working towards a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills which will be assessed in the workplace by a qualified assessor.

The day you are in college you will work towards a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science. The course consists of a minimum of 30 hours per week in a pharmacy environment, which includes on day a week attendance at college.


Key Units

You will study a wide range of related units including: Chemistry, Biology and Microbiology for Pharmacy. 

You will learn about Human Physiology and the action and uses of medicines. Some Units will focus on Community Pharmacy practice and you will cover the dispensing and supply of medicines including Aseptic. You will also study the law, ethics and practice relating to pharmacy.

Future Opportunities

You will be eligible to register as a qualified Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council and apply for Pharmacy Technician posts in the Hospital and follow a choice of career pathways through medicine management, medicines information, pharmaceutical production, procurement, IT, training and development and more.

Will this course suit me?
An ideal student for this course is one who is motivated and enthusiastic and has a keen interest in science and maths. You must be prepared for hard work with a desire to learn. Good communication skills are really important and you must be able to work well in a team. An aptitude for and interest in Maths and Science, particularly Chemistry and Biology, is essential.


You will build a portfolio of evidence to support the tasks you complete at the workplace to demonstrate you can complete tasks safely and use knowledge learnt.
