Pottery & Ceramics

This course offers candidates the opportunity to develop basic craft skills in all aspects of ceramics and pottery. It will introduce candidates to equipment and materials used in this particular craft.


Key Units

During the course you will have the opportunity to develop skills, expertise and knowledge in the following:

Basic skills of clay preparation

  • Coiling
  • Pinching - hand modelling
  • Slip castingĀ 
  • Slab construction
  • Throwing

Decorative techniques

  • Scaffito - incised
  • Impressed - relief
  • Wax resist

Glaze and colour application

  • Dipping
  • Spraying
  • Brush on

3D Visualisation

  • Examining and exploring some examples of non-functional ceramics and domestic pottery
  • Health and safety aspects of using workshop equipment and materials

Candidates are encouraged to visit galleries, museums and make use of the college library for inspiration.

Students who wish to attend further courses will be encouraged to extend and refine their ceramic skills.
