This applied science course covers biological, chemical and physical science topics.

About the Course

It will provide you with the knowledge, understanding, technical and employability skills to help you find employment in the applied science sector or to give you entry to a wide range of higher education courses.

Key Units

If you want to study or work in science, get practical experience and knowledge of working in a laboratory then the course is perfect for you! 

You should have a positive attitude, an enquiring mind and good time management skills to be able to work to coursework targets and deadlines. You will develop scientific practical techniques and learn about working in the science industry. You can also build on skills from Level 2 science such as communication, analytical, evaluative and research skills. It is purely assignment and coursework based, where you will be taught theory sessions and then given an assignment to complete based on the work. This would suit you if you are looking for a course that will develop your organisational abilities and enjoy researching and completing written tasks. 

You will cover core modules such as working in science industry which will give you an overview of different laboratories and areas you may enter. Another core module is scientific practical techniques in which you will carry out investigations and write them up as a laboratory report. In addition a range of option units will be studied which could include topics from biochemistry, chemistry, electricity, mathematical tools in science, microbiology and physiology. Delivery of the course will be through a mixture of theory and practical sessions.

All classes are delivered in purpose built laboratories. You will learn from specialist highly qualified staff with a range of academic and science work related backgrounds. This course has been endorsed by local employers in the science and research industries.

Students will be expected to take part in Work placement on this course. We cannot guarantee that this will not be outside their normal working week or placed in a holiday period. Students need to notify college as soon as possible if they have holidays booked at any time during the year, so we make sure we coordinate placements.

  • Assessment is based on coursework in which you will complete a series of assignments and practical reports
  • You will also carry out independent research
  • Some aspects of the coursework will require you to carry out a practical task in lesson as part of this

Where does this Lead

BTEC level 3 qualifications are highly valued by employers and higher education institutions and will prepare you for a career in many science-based industries and organisations.

If you decide to go to university/higher education you could take a degree in a subject such as biology, biomedical science, chemistry, food science, forensic science or physics. With appropriate work experience you could also apply for health related degrees such as nursing or radiography/radiotherapy or other degrees such as primary teaching.

If you want to go into employment straight after this course you could look for work in areas such as a hospital laboratory, research laboratory, a laboratory in a school or college or a quality control laboratory.

Qualification Title: Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science which is accepted for entry to higher education and carries UCAS Tariff points equivalent to 3 A levels.

You may be entitled to help from the college‚Äôs Learner Support Fund with the cost of trips, visits and anything else you need to buy for your course. The course is over three days per week which gives you two days to do experience if you choose as well as work on assignments.
