Sign Language Signature L1

British Sign Language is the fascinating language used by some 60,000 deaf people in this country. During several years of part time study, you can learn to become competent and fluent in signing with deaf people socially or at work.


About the Course

Please consider the following before enrolling - 

  • You have to see BSL in action to learn it. You need to be able to commit to attending over 80% of your classes so we can help you to succeed.
  • BSL is a visual/gestural language. You need to be prepared to do 2 filmed assessments with your tutor to demonstrate your ability in BSL.
  • The cost of the assessments is included in the course fee but should you need to retake one there is a fee chargeable.
  • You will need to practise for a minimum of 45 minutes a week between classes (private study or by arranging to meet up with fellow students).
  • You can use the internet to look at recommended website to help you study.
  • Please inform the college, at enrolment, if you have any additional learning needs, you will be offered an assessment to determine your requirements so that any appropriate support can be put in place at the start of the course.

Year 1 - Level 1 Award in BSL - Signature

This course is for beginners and involves learning simple everyday language. You need to achieve all three units to gain the Award.

Unit 101 - Introduction to BSL includes:

  • Transport and directions
Unit 102 - Conversational BSL includes-
  • At home - people, animals and objects
  • Using numbers
  • Interests and activities
  • Weather
Unit 103 - BSL at School, College or Work includes:
  • Getting around
  • Exchanging information
  • Refreshments 
  • Using numbers

Where does this Lead

Progression Course:
Year 2 - Level 2 Certificate in BSL - Signature. You must hold a CACDP Certificate in BSL at level 1 OR a Signature Level 1 Award in BSL. You will learn functional communication in BSL about a range of real life, routine, daily experiences. You need to achieve all three units to gain the certificate.
