Sign Language Signature L2

The course will build on the skills learned at Level 1 by introducing more advanced receptive and production BSL Skills.


About the Course

British Sign Language is the fascinating language used by some 50,000 deaf people in this country. During several years of part time study, you can learn to become competent and fluent in signing with deaf people socially or at work.


Key Units

The following units will be studied on this course:

  • Unit 201 - Receptive Skills
  • Unit 202 - Productive Skills - Filmed
  • Unit 203 - Conversational Skills - Assessment

There are four themes to this qualification:
  • Everyday conversation
  • Eating and drinking
  • Shopping and spending
  • Travel and holidays
The following learning ladder shows how you can progress through the stages:

Year 1 - Level 1 Award in BSL - Signature
  • This course is for beginners and involves learning simple everyday language. You need to achieve all three units to gain the Award.
Year 2 - Level 2 Certificate in BSL - Signature
  • You must hold a CACDP Certificate in BSL at level 1 OR a Signature Level 1 Award in BSL. You will learn functional communication in BSL about a range of real life, routine, daily experiences. You need to achieve all three units to gain the certificate.
From level 2 BSL, you could progress to BSL NVQ level 3 (NOT AVAILABLE AT THE SHEFFIELD COLLEGE).

Please inform the college, at enrolment, if you have any additional learning needs, you will be offered an assessment to determine your requirements so that any appropriate support can be put in place at the start of the course. You must be prepared to practise for a minimum of 1.5 hours a week - either private study, meeting class members to practise or involvement in the Deaf Community.

Each stage is accredited through Signature. All courses are part-time.
