Sport (Coaching, development & fitness) BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

The Sport (Performance and Excellence) BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma - Sheffield College Football Academy pathway provides learners with a vocational sport course that will develop the knowledge and skills to work within the football industry or broader sport and active leisure sector. You will be supported to improve your performance level with opportunities to trial for international scholarships via Collegiate soccer USA.


Key Units

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is made up of 18 study units. 


You will learn about: 
  • Anatomy and physiology in sport
  • Fitness testing
  • Training and programming
  • Practical sport
  • Safe and effective sport coaching
  • Sport leadership 
  • Sports injuries
  • Sports nutrition
  • Sport psychology
  • Tactical and technical sport skills
You will study for English and maths qualifications if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade C. Additional short courses may be available to enhance your employability such as FA Level 1 coaching award and FA youth award.

You will also compete for the college football team in the British Colleges league.

You will be expected to take part in a two-week full time block work placement. This will be related to a chosen career outcome which could include teaching, coaching, fitness, personal training, gym instructing, sport coaching and development.

In addition to classroom based lessons and coaching you will be required to study independently to complete course work assignments.

Assessment

BTEC Level 3 Sport courses are assessed mostly by course work and practical assessments however there will also be some exams.


Where does this Lead

Your next step could be into a professional playing contract or into employment in the sport, health and fitness industries or to higher education. Successful students may progress to one of our Sport Foundation Degrees or other university/higher education courses such as physical education, teaching, leisure and recreation management, events management, sports development and coaching.

You will learn from highly qualified, expert staff with a range of academic and sport work related backgrounds. Students also benefit from our strong connections to the city's professional sports clubs including, Sheffield FC, SUFC, SWFC, Sheffield Eagles, Sheffield Sharks and Sheffield Steeldogs. The excellent facilities for our sport students include a fully equipped fitness suite, sports hall, gym, 3G outdoor pitches and sports science laboratories.

Will the course suit me?
You should have a keen interest in sport and a high level of fitness, as well as being a talented football player. You will need to have good time management skills in order to manage training, coursework and assignment deadlines.


Qualification Title:
Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport (Performance and Excellence) which is accepted for entry to higher education courses and carries UCAS tariff points equivalent to 3 A levels.


Extra Costs

You are expected to buy a training kit at a cost of approx. £100 and will be expected to contribute towards the cost of any trips and visits and to pay for your DBS check. You may be entitled to help with this from the college’s Learner Support Fund.
