Teaching Assistants CACHE L3

The title ‘Teaching Assistant’ is a general title given to Classroom Assistants, Learning Support Assistants and Special Needs Assistants within a school setting. Teaching Assistants work with teachers in classrooms within Primary, Special and Secondary schools supporting the child’s learning. Some may have a general support role while others will have specific responsibilities for an individual child or age group.

About the Course

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in a school setting. The course covers 11 units including children and young people’s development, inclusive practice and communication and professional relationships.

Key Units

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Prepare a variety of resources for literacy and numeracy activities
  • Understand the objectives and expectations of pupil achievement for an activity
  • Encourage and support pupils while carrying out different types of activities
  • Keep up-to-date records of pupils’ progress
  • Describe school policies and procedures and explain your role in implementing them
  • Use a variety of strategies to manage pupils’ behaviour
  • Use different ways to build and maintain positive relationships with pupils

You will be required to attend college once per week (4.5 hours) and a relevant placement for at least two days per week. The college offers daytime and evening classes details of which will be available in the summer term.

The placement is a compulsory part of the assessment and therefore it is a condition of your offer to study on the course that you obtain a placement in a Primary School for a minimum of two days per week.

Experience of working with children in a voluntary or paid capacity will be an advantage. If offered a place on the course you will need to apply for a Criminal Records Bureau (DBS) check. This will be processed through the college and currently costs £51.
