The Net-Trainers Course

Developed and delivered by key members of the award-winning LeTTOL team, in partnership with online learning experts across Europe

Net-Trainer is a European term to describe the job of the online or e-tutor. This person:

  • develops or adapts learning so that it can be delivered using Internet technologies
  • establishes effective and ethical processes to ensure learners are supported throughout the course
  • provides individual learners with supportive and constructive feedback
  • manages online group interactions

The Net-Trainers course has been developed by a partnership of nine European countries. Experts in online and e-learning have worked together to develop a common job profile, training framework and learning objectives. Each course is delivered by a different country, and the course contents are written to recognise the educational context and culture of that country.

Net-Trainer Course Outline

The Net-Trainers course is split up into a pre-training module and four main modules, each of which corresponds to different vocational functions of online trainers.

Module 1: The First Steps in Net-Training

Module 2: Concept and Challenges of Net-Training
This module explores the principles of net-training, considering how it can enhance the learning experience, and how e-learning models differ from other delivery models. Issues and challenges are explored, in the context of a changing world where technology and attitudes to it are changing fast.

Module 3: Tutoring Net-Learners
This module considers how the needs of learners are met when they are taught at a distance, using technological means. Participants gain understanding in the support of individual learners, and the management of online collaborative groups.  Participants explore the policies and strategies needed to deal with particular situations - learners with special needs, discord within groups and unethical behaviour.

Module 4: Designing Net-Learning Materials
This module focuses on how to collect, adapt, create and organise the different types of training materials that are necessary for Net-Learning. Participants are taken through the steps they need to take to develop an e-learning specification.

Module 5: Developing a Net-Training Project
In order to develop e-learning that will work, it has to be properly resourced, and must have the support of others, including managers. This module provides a framework to enable participants to plan their implementation strategy and identify the resources - human and technological - they will need for the successful implementation of an online project.

All course activities, tutor support, peer interaction and assessment take place online.

Learners progress by reading the web-based course materials, completing individual activities and taking part in collaborative activities.

All timetables and deadlines are outlined in the Study Guide which is received at the start of the course - it is expected that learners will meet these deadlines.

Failure to meet deadlines could mean that learners are deemed to have withdrawn from the course. Learners would then need to apply to defer in order to complete the course, and unless there were exceptional circumstances, a deferral fee would be charged.
