Bruno Castro, 21, was highly commended in the Young Signmaker of the Year category of the British Sign Awards.

Bruno is completing a Diploma in Signmaking at Level 2 at the College’s City campus on Granville Road. He has overcome considerable challenges to complete his studies due to having a hearing impairment.

Speaking through a sign language interpreter, Bruno said: “I feel very happy about this award. My favourite part of the signwriting process is seeing the finished work.”

British Sign Language interpreter Ann Houghton supports Bruno in his lectures as well as the English and maths classes that he attends.

David Gregory, Signmaking Lecturer at The Sheffield College, said: “We are very proud of Bruno. He’s got a real love of and talent for signwriting and it’s fantastic that his skills have been recognised.”

The British Sign Awards awards celebrate the skill and creativity of British signmakers and businesses. They were announced at a ceremony in Leicester last term on November 8th. For more information, visit http://britishsignawards.org/
