Apprentice Dental Nurse

Situated in the heart of Bakewell, we aim to provide high quality dental care for the entire family in a caring and professional environment.

We are looking forward to 2 new Dental Apprentices joining the practice, to provide clinical support to dentists, hygienists, and patients under supervision, assist with reception or any clerical duties as required and perform such other tasks as reasonable requested by the practice principals.

Qualifications Required

5 GCSEs A-C/9-4 including Maths, English and Double Science.

Full Description

Responsible to: The practice principals, practice manager and the dentist/hygienist/therapist you are working with.

Employment duties:
Assist Dentist, Hygienist or Therapist by providing dental chairside support duties relevant
to stage of competence under supervision of a named GDC registrant in accordance with
the GDC guide for trainee dental nurses.

Keep a log of your structured induction and on-going compliance training using Training
Record Template (M 222E) and ensure each training session is counter-sign by your
supervisor - a GDC registrant.

Work towards a nationally recognise qualification leading to the registration with the GDC.

Follow all practice policies and procedures.

Establish, promote and maintain productive working relationships with all of the dental

Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of others who may be
affected by your work.

Key tasks to be carried out under supervision:

Develop and demonstrate competence in:
The chairside support procedures outlined in your Competence Record (M 225C).
The manipulation and application of dental materials across a range of dental treatment
Knowledge and application of a wide range of dental instruments and equipment relevant
for dental procedures.
Decontamination and preparation of treatment rooms for a range of dental procedures.
Decontamination of dental devices using appropriate practice decontamination equipment
after receiving the necessary vaccinations.
Decontamination equipment maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer's
Waste segregation and disposal in accordance with the practice policies and procedures.
Use of practice computer and x-ray machines.
Completion of laboratory request forms and keeping records of all items sent, received
and fitted.
Checking that all necessary laboratory work is returned and ready for each session.

Provide patient support by:
Liaising with reception over appointments for each patient.
Escorting patients from the waiting room to the surgery, confirming the patients medical
history is up-to-date and communicating to the dentist/hygienist/therapist any change in
medical history or problems that he/she has noted.
Monitoring, supporting and reassuring patients.
Supporting the patient and colleagues if there is an emergency.
Providing appropriate advice to patients.

Perform chaperoning duties for other clinical GDC registrants.

Follow professional, ethical guidelines including all rules on confidentiality.

Perform reception duties:
Answer telephone, receive mail and emails.
Meet and greet patients and/or carers.
Manage the appointment book, send appointments by mail/email.
Maintain recall systems.
File patient clinical records and correspondence securely and ensure they are kept up-to-
Maintain and promote patient confidentiality in relation to patient medical history, details of
treatment, financial transactions or any conversation overheard.
Process patient payments.

Attend agreed competence and development training:
Induction and any other structured in-house sessions.
External training sessions on a weekly basis at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital,
Sheffield, as part of the recognised Apprenticeship Programme leading to your
Practice compliance meetings and training, including annual training for medical
emergencies and CPR.

Perform other tasks:
Assist in all clerical and administrative duties as required by the practice principals.
Report equipment failures or breakages to the practice manager.
Bring to the attention of the practice principles or practice manager any concerns about
aspects of the practice, its performance or the performance of others in the practice.
Attend all practice meetings as requested.
Perform any other tasks that are reasonably requested by the practice principals.

Working Week

Hours: 37
Days: Monday - Friday, 9.00 - 5.00 pm.
Holidays: 20 days, plus statutory.

We pay the national minimum pay rates relating to age:
Under 18: £4.62
18-20: £6.56
21-22: £8.36
23 and over: £8.91

“The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £4.30 per hour. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.”
