About this Course

The Level 1 Bakery qualification is the first step towards your career in bakery. Designed for people who wish to work in this popular industry, the course will ensure you develop the basic skills needed and become familiar with industrial equipment. Most students would normally start at Level 1 but for some students Level 2 may be more appropriate.

Key Units

An ideal student for this course is one who is motivated with a desire to work in the bakery industry and with an interest in making and baking a wide range of cakes, breads, scones and pastries. You must be flexible and self-motivated. You will need good preparation skills and to be well organised. 

Through this qualification you will develop a practical and theoretical understanding of weighing and mixing processes involved in the production of a variety of bread and confectionery products. You will also develop further skills around confectionery finishing, packaging and selling techniques and food safety principles. 

In addition to learning basic bakery skills you will also obtain a Food Safety Certificate as part of your qualification. 

If you do not currently hold grades A* - C / 3 or above at GCSE, you will also work towards improving your achievements in Maths and English.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs, grades A* - E / grade 2 or above (or equivalent qualifications), to include English Language.

Future Opportunities

Career opportunities at this stage could include supermarket in-store bakeries or independent bakeries of any size. Further study for science-based or technical qualifications could lead to employment in test bakery or research and development.

Extra Costs

What will I need? 

You will be expected to join ABST at an approximate cost of £15.
You will need to purchase some specialist equipment before the start of the course, including a bakery uniform and other equipment. The approximate cost of this equipment is £350
