About this Course

This is a practical qualification that will equip you with the knowledge and skills to work within the barbering industry.

Key Units

This is a professional qualification which will provide you with the requisite knowledge, understanding and skills to work competently in the barbering Industry

All aspects of practical work are carried out in a closely simulated industrial environment on clients.

As part of your Level 2 Certificate in Barbering qualification, you will study the following core and specialist units:

  • Following Health and Safety salon practices
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Shampooing/conditioning the host
  • Styling men's hair
  • Cutting men's hair
  • 2D Patterning techniques in hair
  • Cutting men's facial hair
  • Basic colour correction (optional)

You will also be given the opportunity to take part in hairdressing competitions and hairdressing design skills, manufacturer's courses and visits to trade shows.

In addition to this you must spend one day per week in a commercial salon on a work placement.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a GCSE grade 3 or above in English Language OR Level 1 equivalent in Literacy.

ESOL learners should have achieved Level 1 in all 4 elements – Speaking, listening, reading and writing.  You will be asked to produce the evidence of the appropriate qualification.

The ideal candidate will be a good communicator and listener with excellent social skills, demonstrate a degree of artistic skills and flair, be highly dexterous, friendly and have physical stamina. 

You will be expected to attend all sessions in full and participate in some self directed learning on a weekly basis.

Assessment

This will comprise of:

  • Practical Assessments
  • Exams
  • Assignments

Internal online exams will be taken periodically throughout the course for the mandatory units.

Practical skills will be assessed after training and practice, competence of practical skills will be demonstrated by graded summative assessments. You will be required to work on real clients.

Future Opportunities

This qualification is designed for people who wish to develop a career in Barbering. Successful students progress onto NVQ Level 3 or an Advanced Apprenticeship.

A voluntary or paid work placement within a barbering/hairdressing salon is advantageous and recommended.

Extra Costs

You will need to purchase a professional uniform and kit. Order forms will be supplied on your first day.

The uniform must be worn at all times when in salon and in addition to this you must wear full black shoes.
