About this Course

The HNC Diploma in Construction is a work related course, which is accredited by the construction industry, and professional institutions as the nationally recognised technician level qualification prior to university study. You learn by relevant assessments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities. It is a broad based course, that enables you to develop a career in the construction industry.

Key Units

The course is delivered at The Sheffield College on a part-time basis. This means attending for 1 full day a week for 2 Years. The course begins in early September. You will study 4 units per year.

  • Unit 15 Principles of Refurbishment
  • Unit 21 Site Supervision and Operations

  • Unit 1 Individual Project
  • Unit 3 Science and Materials
  • Unit 4 Construction Practice and Management
  • Unit 5 Legal and Statutory Responsibilities  

Entry Requirements

Level 3 Diploma in Construction (Merit Grade) or A level at a grade A*- D and GCSE’s at grade 9 (A*) – to grade 4 (C) (Maths, English & Science are essential and other GCSE result must be associated the relevant construction and design topics). 


Mature students with equivalent qualifications or technical experience gained whilst working in the industry, may be admitted at the discretion of the course team.

Assessment

All units are assessed and graded to national criteria. Each unit is assignment based, there are no exams. An overall grade for the qualification is awarded. 
Assessment is specifically designed to fit the purpose and objective of the qualification. It includes a range of assessment types and styles suited to vocational qualifications in the sector. 

Set tasks – learners take the assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task.

Where does this Lead

The role of a Construction technician is very diverse from Construction Management, Quantity Surveyor, Building Surveyor, Real-Estate, Property Development, Urban and Rural Planning
Estate and Building and Consulting Services for all aspects of the Built Environment. 

A career within the Construction and the Built Environment offers:

Diversity and variety: not only are there plenty of career choices, no two days are the same; you could be travelling overseas to another office or on a site meeting with a client

Future Opportunities

Students who have completed a HNC Diploma in Construction may progress to study a Degree, in a Construction related course at an appropriate university.

Our tutors have strong links with employers in the region. There are currently a number of major construction and regeneration projects taking place in Sheffield and these links have allowed students to gain vital experience through site visits.

There is a full cost course. 
Basic stationery equipment is required, e.g. A4 note pad, scientific calculator, pens, pencils, ruler, etc.
