About this Course

The Core Construction Skills (Joinery) programme is designed to prepare people to enter the construction industry as joiners and carpenters. This programme will give you a thorough grounding in the practical aspects of joinery, enabling you the opportunity to progress to a Trade Diploma upon successful completion.

Key Units

This programme, through a learner-focused progression plan, will further develop your core construction skills at Level 1 by completing the 6706-13 Diploma in Construction. It will teach you the core skills involved in joinery. You will cover building methods and technology used within the industry, as well as key joinery skills such as halving and housing joints. You will also extend your knowledge of the fundamental elements of health and safety practices on a joinery site.

  • Use of Hand Tools
  • Use of Power Tools
  • Woodworking Joints
  • Principles of Building
  • Health & Safety

English and Maths
These skills are at the heart of construction, and learners will be expected to complete English and Maths studies as part of their programme (unless you hold a GCSE grade 4 [reformed grading] or grade C [legacy grading] in Maths and/or English Language).

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grades A*- E / grade 2 or above, including English Language.

Your progress will also be reviewed regularly in tutorial sessions. 

Where does this Lead

This qualification is designed for people wishing to take up a career within the building industry as a joiner. Successful completion of all the elements of this programme may lead to progression to a trade-specific Diploma, or onto an Apprenticeship


Future Opportunities

This qualification will lead to opportunities at Level 2, and then a successful career in the carpentry and joinery industry.

Work Experience
All learners will complete a number of supervised site visits to local and nationally recognised employers.

Personal Study
Students will be expected to work independently on project work when they are not in college, to assist with their revision and independent study skills.

Extra Costs

You will be required to provide/purchase your own PPE, including:
  • Overalls
  • Safety boots
  • College shirt
All other safety equipment will be provided on an as/when needed basis. You may wish to purchase your own tools which you can then use in your Apprenticeship/future employment.

Students in financial hardship can apply to the Student Support Fund for help with course related expenses.
