The Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants can lead to becoming a dog grooming assistant and is for anyone who wants to start working in the industry - ideal if you don't have any previous qualifications or experience in dog grooming.

This qualification is aimed for you if you are wanting to start a career in the dog grooming industry. 

You will gain practical skills and knowledge which are important for working as a dog grooming assistant. You can progress on to further learning and training in this area, including the Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming at The Sheffield College. 

This qualification covers the skills you will need to progress to work as a dog grooming assistant. 
  • Prepare and groom dogs prior to bathing
  • Bathing of dogs
  • Drying dogs and preparing a dog for styling
  • Carrying out trimming of a dog's coat to prepare for styling
  • Moving and lifting of dogs
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and biosecurity of the dog grooming environment
  • Professional conduct
  • An introduction to anatomical features, breed characteristics and behaviour of dogs
Is this level is right for me?
If you have little/no knowledge or experience of working in the dog grooming industry and want to learn the skills you need to work under supervision in a dog grooming salon then this Level 2 qualification will be a good place to start. You must have a keen interest in dogs and feel comfortable around all breeds and sizes. 

Entry Requirements

No specific prior qualifications, learning or experience are required for students who wish to undertake this qualification.


However, due to the nature of learning and assessment, candidates will need good literacy and numeracy skills, i.e. the ability to read and interpret written tasks, to write answers and complete documents in a legible and understandable form and to make calculations. Candidates will also need to be able to organise written information clearly and coherently, although they will not be assessed for spelling or grammatical accuracy unless these are part of the assessment criteria.

Please note this course is part-time and only available to those aged 18+.

Assessment

For the Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants assessment methods include written assignments, question and answer papers, practical demonstrations and an online GOLA exam. 

Where does this Lead

On completion you will gain the Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants. This is the prerequisite for the Level 3 Dog Grooming Diploma which will enable you to go on and take prior to meeting certain requirements. You must complete Level 2 prior to taking Level 3.

Our dog grooming courses are based at our Hillsborough Campus, where we have invested in brand-new, state-of-the-art facilities; including electronic height adjustable grooming tables and finishing dryers.

Extra Costs

You will be expected to wear suitable clothing including non-slip flat shoes during practical sessions and you will be required to purchase your own equipment. This can be purchased through college as a student kit at a discounted price.
