About this Course

This course enables elite sport performers to access a sport specific development programme alongside a high quality education programme. This unique opportunity has been created through the launch of an exciting new city wide partnership that utilises the strengths of The Sheffield College, Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.

Extended Diploma Year 1 (additional topics)

  • Organising sports events
  • Sport as a business

Extended Diploma Year 2 (additional topics)
  • Current issues in sport
  • Physical Education and the Care of Children and Young People

You will also complete a sport related project. Additional short courses may be available to enhance your employability with the opportunity to achieve qualifications such as National Governing Body awards and other industry awards.

On your programme you will study for Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade C. You will be required to work independently outside of taught class time to complete course work assignments.

Entry Requirements

Diploma

4 GCSEs grade A* - C / grade 4 or above (or acceptable alternatives) including English Language

Extended Diploma
5 GCSEs grade A* - C / grade  4 or above (or acceptable alternatives) including English Language


Assessment

The BTEC course is continually assessed, there are no formal exams.

  • Group or individual projects

Where does this Lead

Successful completion of this course, good attendance and punctuality along with tutor recommendation can lead to an undergraduate degree at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) or a foundation degree at The Sheffield College (with top-up option in year 3 at SHU).

Qualification Title

  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence) OR
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport (Performance and Excellence) - this is accepted for entry to higher education courses and carries UCAS tariff points equivalent to 3 A Levels
Will the course suit me?
You should be performing at a sufficiently high standard within you chosen sport (you may be required to trial if you are not currently performing at such a level in your chosen sport). You will need to have good time management skills in order to manage coursework and assignment deadlines.

Extra Costs

You will be expected to buy specific clothing for your course at a cost of £150.00. You will need to bring appropriate kit for indoor and outdoor activities. 

You will also be expected to contribute £50.00 towards the cost of trips and any residential visits.


Students in financial hardship may be eligible to apply to the Learner Support Fund for assistance with course related expenses.
