About this Course

This study programme is for students who want to develop their knowledge and understanding of sport. The programme has two distinct pathways. A fitness pathway that emphasises study in this area including health, exercise and anatomy; and a coaching pathway that focuses on coaching, skill development and analysis of sports performance. The programme has both academic and practical elements of study, plus a mandatory work-based experience in sport.

Key Units

Level 2 Sport - Fitness pathway

Student will study 4 subjects designed to develop their knowledge and understanding of health and fitness. These units are; 
  • Participation in Sport
  • Health Exercise and Nutrition
  • Anatomy and Physiology 
  • Sports Volunteering

Students will develop both academic and practical skill in these areas of study. In order to be successful, students will need to commit to consistently applying themselves both in the classroom and at home to complete assessed work.

There will be opportunities to enrich subject knowledge through trips, visits and external speakers.

Level 2 Sport - Coaching pathway

Student will study 4 subjects designed to develop their knowledge and understanding of health and fitness. These units are: 
  • Participation in Sport
  • Sports Coaching 
  • Developing Skills and Tactical Awareness 
  • Sports Volunteering

Students will develop both academic and practical skill in these areas of study. In order to be successful students will need to commit to consistently applying themselves both in the classroom and at home to complete assessed work.

There will be opportunities to enrich subject knowledge through trips, visits and external speakers.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement for school leavers is FOUR grade 3 GCSEs.
For internal progression students, the entry requirement is the successfully completion of previous areas of study and a Tutor Mentor recommendation.

Assessment

The Level 2 in Sport uses a range of different methods of assessment including both theoretical and practical. Both pathways are entirely coursework assessed with no externally set exams.

Where does this Lead

The Level 2 in Sport is primarily a stepping stone to further study in Sport. Students at The Sheffield College can progress to:
  • Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science
  • Extended Diploma in Sport
  • Extended Diploma in Sport (Elite Basketball Academy)
