About this Course

This qualification is ideal for people who are interested in a career in the health and social care sector. This could include caring for elderly people in a care home, working with adults or children with learning disabilities or helping people recover from illness or injury in a hospital or care centre. The Level 2 Diploma will develop on the knowledge and skills learned at Level 1.

Key Units

Level 2 CACHE Health and Social Care consists of two core units, two mandatory units and five specialist units.

  • Unit 5: Promoting Health and Well-being 
  • Unit 6: The Impact of Nutrition on Health and Well-being
  • Unit 8: Individual Rights in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 10: Human Body Systems and Care of Disorders
  • Unit 12: Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Well-being
On your programme you will study Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum of grade C/4 at GCSE level.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grades A* - D / grade 3 or above (or acceptable alternatives), including English Language.

Where does this Lead

Successful completion of this qualificagtion, good attendance and punctuality along with tutor recommendation can lead to one of our Health and Social Care CACHE Level 3 programmes or other Level 3 programmes. We expect students to be aiming for at least a merit grade at Level 2 to support good progression to Level 3.

Students can also apply for Apprenticeship programmes in areas such as Hospital Care or Childcare.

Will the qualification suit me?
An ideal person for this qualification is one who is interested in caring for vulnerable people of all ages and abilities in a care capacity. It is an advantage to be a patient person who enjoys helping people.


Work experience
Work experience is an invaluable part of your study programme and will help to guarantee that you are prepared for the working environment on completion of your studies. Many, if not all of employers and Higher Education providers will expect that learners have successfully completed work experience in a vocationally related area, in order to be offered employment or progression on to a higher level of study. 

This work experience placement forms part of this course and also forms part of many assessments within your college study programme. 

We will discuss your placement with you and take into account where you live and what career you would like to do in the future. Students usually work in setting such as nurseries, state and private hospitals, schools, nursing homes, day care centres, special needs centres, rehabilitation centres and youth and community organisations.

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is required for students going on work placements and will be carried out at the start of the course. Students will need to pay for this and the cost is £52. (Please be aware that this may change.) 

Course enrichment
Enrichment activities can include trips, visits, residential courses, presentations by guest speakers such as nurses, therapists and care workers. Health and social care professionals come in to college to work with you on practical assessments and activities.

Staff and Facilities
At the Sheffield College you will learn from highly qualified staff with a range of academic and health and social care work related backgrounds. Students also benefit from our strong partnerships with local health and social care employers. The Sheffield College has excellent facilities for our health and social care students, which include well-equipped learning areas, and also has a mock hospital ward at City Campus.

Extra Costs

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is required for students going on work placements and will be carried out at the start of the course. Students will need to pay for this and the cost is £52. (Please be aware that this may change).  


The cost of any trips and visits are kept to a minimum. You will also need a course revision book to assist in preparation in examined units.

Please note that there will be a charge for any retake of examinations.

You may be entitled to help from the college’s Learner Support Fund with the cost of trips, visits and anything else you need to buy for your course.
