About this Course

This Diploma is designed to give those students without the traditional Level 3 qualifications the skills and experience required to study nursing and other healthcare related degrees (such as Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy) at university.

Key Units

This qualification is for you if you are an adult student and are looking to gain the qualifications to attend university to study nursing or related health professions, at a higher level.

Access to HE Diplomas are well established, national qualifications which allow students without traditional Level 3 qualifications to apply for degree courses and enter university.

Our Access to Nursing and Midwifery Diploma runs over one year and is ideal for students wishing to progress to university, to study on degree courses in nursing and other related health professions. The Diploma may also be a beneficial qualification for students looking to go directly into employment (perhaps also in the healthcare sector), where Level 3 qualifications are required.

You need to have a genuine desire and aptitude to enter nursing. Universities will expect you to have gained experience working in a healthcare setting and will also require a DBS check. We strongly advise you to have related work experience or employment in place by the time you begin your Access to Nursing and Midwifery Diploma.

Our Access to Nursing and Midwifery(Health Professions) Diploma is made up of the following areas of study:

  • Academic Writing
  • Research
  • HE Toolkit
  • Health Psychology
  • Stereotyping
  • Carers
  • Mental Health
  • Principles of Care
  • Social Psychology
  • Body Structure Function
  • System Physiology
  • Non Infectious Conditions
  • Sex and Reproduction

Entry Requirements

GCSE English Language and Maths grade 4/C or equivalent.

For students who do not currently meet the requirements, the college offers a pre-access course which is a one year study programme designed to help students develop their skills and knowledge in preparation for study on an Access to HE Diploma.

Assessment

Assessment is on-going and developed through a portfolio of course work. A large proportion of your work will be essay or assignment based but you can also expect exams, presentations and project work as well as work based and simulated competency based assessments.

Where does this Lead

The qualification content will provide you with the skills required to pursue a place at university in related healthcare and nursing degrees.

Will the course suit me?
You need to carefully consider your long-term career goals and consider what skills you have gained outside of education.

Many universities will be asking you for high grades in your work and you need to be sure these are achievable. You should research university courses very carefully to make sure you have what they are looking for as you will be applying for a university place within a few weeks of starting the Access course. It is recommended that you research all nursing specialisms and a good starting place for this would be the NHS Careers Advice website
