About this Course

This Level 4 Floristry course is aimed at experienced florists who aspire to, or who are already working at management level within Floristry. The course combines creative floristry techniques with business concepts and processes. Students will work on and develop their creative processes throughout the qualification, culminating in a design portfolio of around 35 technical designs. In addition, students will have opportunities to compete in national competitions and visit large-scale floristry events.

Key Units

To gain the Level 4 Higher Diploma in Floristry (ICSF), candidates must pass all ten units and three integrated assignments.


Unit 001: Botanical Concepts & Practices for Floristry
This unit covers the anatomical structure and physiological processes affecting plant health and growth, the plant in relation to its environment, the principles of botanical nomenclature and interior plant display.

Unit 002: Historical Studies for Floristry
This unit explores historical periods and their influence on floral decoration, including historical contexts, design sources, fashions and floral decorations across the range.
 
Unit 003: Floral Event Practices
This unit explores the commercial opportunities available to an experienced florist when providing floral decorations for a variety of venues and events. 

Unit 004: Business Practices for Floristry
This unit covers the implementation of procedures to ensure the smooth running of a floristry business. It encompasses customer care, staff supervision and basic training, security and an awareness of retail legislation.

Unit 005: Marketing & Promotional Practices for Floristry
This unit covers the implementation of practices in marketing and promoting the business to maximise sales potential. 

Unit 006: Technical Floristry Skills [Tied Designs]
This unit enables candidates to construct a wide range of hand tied designs to a high level of technical competence. Plant material, flowers, natural and manufactured materials will be used to demonstrate correct application of design principles.  

Unit 007: Technical Floristry Skills [Wired & Glued Designs]
This unit enables candidates to understand the purpose and importance of wiring and gluing skills and demonstrate different methods of wiring, the use of the correct gauges and the safe use of glue in the construction of a wide range of designs to a high technical competence.

Unit 008: Technical Floristry Skills [Designs in Mediums]
This unit enables candidates to construct a wide range of designs using a medium to a high standard of technical competence. 

Unit 009: Technical Floristry Skills [Design Trends]
This unit focuses on the construction and presentation of a wide range of designs, to a high technical competence, using current trends as inspiration. In addition, candidates will identify significant retail trends and florists influencing international floral design. 

Unit 010: Design Concepts in Floristry

This unit enables candidates to investigate, analyse, interpret and apply international floral design terminology, concepts and principles. 

Entry Requirements

Ideally, students will possess the following:

  • A Level 3 Floristry qualification (or equivalent 'bench training')
  • GCSE Maths and English Language at a minimum of grade C/4 or above

Assessment

Both practical activities and theory knowledge are assessed by 3 integrated assignments throughout the course, leading to and end-point exam, which will test both the practical skills of the student and also the theoretical knowledge gained.


A portfolio of evidence will also be collected throughout the qualification.

Throughout the practical units for this course, students are expected to show a meticulous standard of workmanship, work to commercial timescales and speeds and adhere to health and safety at all times.

Where does this Lead

Once successfully completed, this course could lead to further study on the Level 5 Master Diploma in Professional Floristry.

Future Opportunities

Successful completion of this qualification could lead students to become a Supervisor or Manager within a retail floristry business.

  • Attend Fleurex (Floristry trade show) and assist national and international floral designers

Extra Costs

Students are required to have a fully equipped floristry toolbox (a list of suggested items is available from the course tutor) and also all materials (both fresh and sundry) required for the practical designs need to be brought to college by the student each week.
