About this Course

This is a 28-week (usually four days a week) intensive professional course designed to lead you directly into employment as a multi-media reporter or photojournalist. This course is an excellent alternative to university for students who would prefer to take a professional route into journalism.

Key Units

Whilst on this level 5 course, you will study essential journalism, digital journalism, media law, video journalism and other subjects.

The qualification is taught through a combination of lectures and hands-on practical experience, at The Sheffield College's Hillsborough campus. It is a part-time course, requiring a commitment of 2.5 days a week in college.

We have excellent contacts with editors and newsrooms across the UK. You will also take part in at least two work experience placements throughout the programme, giving you the chance to showcase your newly learnt skills and knowledge.

Units covered include:
  • Essential Journalism
  • Essential Media Law and Ethics
  • plus a range of practical optional modules

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE English Language grade C/4 or above. 
  • Level 3 qualification such as A-levels or UAL Extended Diploma. 
Many also complete this qualification as postgraduates. Please note, applicants MUST be 18 or older at the start of the course.

Where does this Lead

This qualification leads you into careers in print, broadcast and online journalism along with associated professions in public relations and marketing.

Extra Costs

Textbooks will be recommended during induction, but the latest edition of McNae's Essential Law for Journalists is a requirement.
