The Sheffield College’s ‘marvellous’ City Nursery retains its Ofsted ‘good’ grading

The Sheffield Nursery City has been graded ‘good’ by Ofsted in a new inspection report.

The Nursery is based in the grounds of the college’s City Campus, Granville Road, and is used by students and staff as well as other parents within the local community.

Inspectors examined the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management, and all have been graded ‘good’.

Angela Foulkes, Chief Executive and Principal, The Sheffield College, said: “It is fantastic to see children thriving in an inclusive environment at The Sheffield Nursery.

“Congratulations to the nursery team for the glowing feedback from parents and for retaining the service’s Ofsted ‘good’ grading.”

Parents have described the nursery as ‘marvellous’. The report highlights that staff take the time to get to know children and their families.

Ofsted inspectors found that children arrive happily at nursery, are ready to play and feel safe in the nursery. Children and their families are greeted in a spacious and welcoming reception area that reflects the diversity of the families using the nursery.

The report notes that staff develop the children’s love of books and reading, and they listen and enthusiastically and encourage their language and interactions. Inspectors found that children make excellent progress especially in their communication, language and singing.

Parents say that staff have helped them to find support and information about their children, especially those who have special educational needs and disabilities and who speak English as an additional language. Parents also point out that staff recognise gaps in their children’s learning and set up activities for individual children.

The new report highlights that staff support individual children, for example, by offering breakfast to those who arrive late and they sit beside them as they eat. Staff use simple language and accompany key words with sign language to help all children feel included.

Leaders, the report adds, have designed an adaptable curriculum with activities that incorporate children’s celebrations, the community and children’s interests.

The arrangements for safeguarding are also effective. The facilities include access in each room to an enclosed outdoor play area.

Abbey Hayes, Head of Nursery Services, The Sheffield College Nursery Service, added: “We want every child in our care to feel welcome, happy and safe. We are delighted with this latest inspection report.”

The 60-place nursery is open all year round from Mondays to Fridays and provides full-time and part-time places for children aged 0 to 5. To read the report, published on 5th December 2023, please visit Ofsted’s website.

The college also runs The Sheffield Nursery Hillsborough at Hillsborough Campus, Livesey Street, which is Ofsted graded ‘good’. Find out more about the college nurseries.
