Sport lies deep in the roots of Sheffield and its people.
We take an enormous amount of pride in the city’s rich sporting heritage as the National City of Sport. The city is home to two massive football teams, as well the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. That’s not to mention rugby (union and league), ice hockey and basketball teams. We also boast the prestigious English Institute of Sport, regularly blessed by our very own Olympic Gold Medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill and heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua
At The Sheffield College you will have the chance to be part of our very own Activity and Fitness Club, and continue the city’s sporting legacy.
Whether you want to compete, play for fun or simply get fit, we have something for you to get involved in.
Our Activities and Fitness Club is constantly putting on new sporting opportunities for all of our students to join, no matter where you study or what you study.
Here's an example of some of the sports that you can take part in:
The Activities and Fitness Club also help to organise things like sports days, biking sessions, Duke of Edinburgh, colour runs, TAG rugby leader training, and have also set up a Young Activator Academy (in partnership with the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA and the WEUROS '22) and volunteering opportunities for students. These kinds of additional opportunities and qualifications look brilliant on your cv, but are also loads of fun to take part in and help you switch off from your studies.
We're always on the look out for new activities and sports to offer our students, too. If you really want to give something a try but don't know where to start or where to join a team, you just need to let us know and we'll do our best to bring the sessions to college!
Do you want to combine your studies with training and competing for some of the best basketball teams around?
Our male and female basketball teams, that are part of our Elite Sports Academy, are amongst some of the best in the country and have just had the most successful year in our history - so far.
We have a number of teams of different abilities, competing against colleges, universities and other basketball academies in the Elite Academy Basketball, Association of College's Yorkshire and Humber, and BUCs leagues.
Joining The Sheffield College Basketball Academy will give you the chance to train with professional coaches, play in these top leagues and develop a career in sport, alongside studying any study programme or A Levels.
If you are an elite athlete you can also study our Sport Basketball Elite Performance study programme, and we'll also help you study additional qualifications for players with the potential to turn professional. We have been chosen by Basketball England, the sport’s governing body, to be part of the England Development Programme for basketball in Yorkshire and are the only college in the region to deliver this qualification.
Oweing to the success of the Academy, five of our students have just been offered sporting scholarships in the USA, and we also have male and female players playing for their national teams on the global stage! Click here to find out more
