Sport City

Our Sport Scholarship programme provides support for students who perform at an elite level.

Sheffield has a long history of sport. We’re the home of football (including the world’s first and oldest football club, Sheffield F.C), host The World Snooker Championships at our very own Crucible Theatre and boast some of the best international sports venues in the country, including the English Institute of Sport.

We’re proud of our sporting heritage as National City of Sport and have produced world-class Olympic champions, international footballers and elite boxers who have gone on to achieve amazing things.

Activities and Fitness Club

At The Sheffield College you will have the chance to be part of our very own Activity and Fitness Club, and continue the city’s sporting legacy.
Whether you want to compete, play for fun or simply get fit,
we have something for you to get involved in.

Our Activities and Fitness Club is constantly putting on new sporting opportunities for all of our students to join, no matter where you study or what you study.

Here's an example of some of the sports that you can
take part in:

  • Football
  • PAN disability football
  • Volleyball
  • Netball
  • Badminton
  • Cricket
  • Table tennis
  • Volleyball
  • Basketball

The Activities and Fitness Club also help to organise things like sports days, biking sessions, Duke of Edinburgh, colour runs, TAG rugby leader training, and have also set up a Young Activator Academy (in partnership with the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA and the WEUROS '22) and volunteering opportunities for students. These kinds of additional opportunities and qualifications look brilliant on your cv, but are also loads of fun to take part in and help you switch off from your studies.

We're always on the look out for new activities and sports to offer our students, too. If you really want to give something a try but don't know where to start or where to join a team, you just need to let us know and we'll do our best to bring the sessions to college!

British University & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Accreditation

The Sheffield College's university level sport provision is accredited by BUCS, the national governing body for Higher Education (HE) sport in the UK.

As a member organisation of BUCS, our sports teams will have the opportunity to compete in a national league with other universities and FE colleges.

There are teams competing in almost every sport you can think of, from football and rugby, to swimming and trampolining.
If you're serious about competing against some of the best young talent in the country, either individually or in a team, the BUCS league will enable you to develop your skills as a player, and give you some brilliant experience for your CV as well!

BUCS clearly know all about Sheffield's sporting legacy too - they hold their National Championships right here in Sheffield every summer, so you can get involved whether you're a player or a spectator.

Our amazing facilities

Our sports facilities are impressive. Our floodlit, all-weather pitch at Hillsborough Campus is 3G and has markings for a full-sized football pitch and three 7-a-side pitches. We have fully equipped gyms and sports halls for you to use. If you love sport, this is the place to be.

As a student you’ll also have access to hire our gym facilities and sports halls if you would like to book them for your use.
