Why you should choose to study IT and Computing at The Sheffield College

Our specialist computing labs and innovation suites give you the opportunity to learn how to master code and develop software applications, so you have the skills and confidence to break into the industry leading the way for new technologies in the world!

But that’s not all, other reasons you should choose to study with us include:

Learning how to use cutting-edge technologies and software

The big subjects in technology currently are Cyber Security, Data Analysis, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Software Development and Network Engineering. All our IT and Computing students have opportunities for hands-on experience with these technologies. We offer pathway specific programmes which allows you to specialise in the areas that excite you the most.

Working with Tutors who are industry experts

We have a very experienced team of Tutors who have all worked in IT and the education sector for many years. They always work with local employers to make sure that the skills you are learning are the ones that are being used in the industry, as well as working with the biggest tech names, such as CISCO, to keep your studies at the forefront of evolving technologies.

You’ll find their experience invaluable when making decisions about your career.

Brand-new teaching spaces fitted with robotics kit

The Sheffield College has excellent facilities, and we recently had a multi-million-pound LEP grant to further improve these including new teaching spaces and around £100k of robotics kit.

Joining an Employer Skills Academy and making industry contacts

Our IT and Computing students are lucky enough to have access to two Employer Skills Academies at the college, WANdisco and Millgate.

WANdisco are a global silicon-valley tech company specialising in Software and Data, so they bring an amazing wealth of experience to the Academy. Students will have the opportunity of earning a placement with the company and there will be regular talks and visits to their Sheffield offices. The Academy room has the latest kit and is designed as an open office space with plants, water, and healthy snacks. Computers and seating are flexible around the type of project work being undertaken.

The Millgate Academy is similar but for Networking and Cyber Security. We have a service area and large server cabinet for setting up local networks. Millgate are a local established tech company with over 7,000 customers and provide placement opportunities for students. They have strong links with other tech companies such as Sophos, one of the leaders in cyber-security.

Both academies are not only the best attended programmes we have, but also have scored achievement rates well over the national average!

Students will also receive exclusive opportunities to:

  • Gain valuable experience to enhance their CV through industry placements
  • Work as a team on specialist projects set by their sponsor
  • Develop their knowledge and skills through masterclasses and workshops delivered by their sponsor and their supply chain
  • Get an employer reference for them to use on their CV and in future interviews
  • Be involved in sector-specific local, regional and national events and competitions
