Our hiring process

We know filling in forms can be time-consuming. This section will explain why it’s necessary.

(We promise it will be worth it when you’re one of the team with a shiny new lanyard!)

Step 1: Apply

Find a vacancy that matches your skills and sounds like something you would enjoy.

Complete the application form thoroughly so we can understand your experience and see if we think you're a good fit for the role.

We use a form instead of CVs as part of our safer recruitment practices, as well as to ensure everybody has a fair chance. This means you’re being scored on your skills, not your writing talents.

It also means your personal information is anonymised to hiring managers, ensuring unconscious bias doesn’t factor in the success of your application.

Remember to read the job specification attached to the advert as the criteria listed will be how your application is assessed.

That said, we’re open-minded - if you think you would be good at something, apply!

Step 2: Shortlisting

A diverse panel, consisting of the hiring manager and other interviewers, will separately assess all applications.

They will only be able to see your work history, qualifications and any statements in your application- not your personal information such as name, age or gender.

You’ll be scored separately by multiple people based on how appropriate we feel you are for the role, taking into consideration your experience, knowledge, skills and the job specification.

These scores will be combined and a shortlist for interviews will be created.

As part of our Disability Confident Leader status, candidates who have declared a disability and meet the minimum requirements for a role will be automatically guaranteed an interview.

If you’re successful, we’ll get in touch to invite you for an interview, and let you know any information you will need to prepare.

If you have been unsuccessful, you’ll receive an email letting you know. You can always ask for feedback to help you with your job search. Also, just because you weren’t shortlisted this time it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply for future roles with us!

Step 3: Interview

You will have a face-to-face interview at one of our campuses so we can get to know you better (and you can see what you think of us).

Depending on the role, you may also be asked to prepare an additional task. For teaching roles, this will normally be a 15-minute Microteach, presented to either the panel or a small group of learners.

For other jobs such as higher-level management roles, you may need to prepare a presentation or take part in a knowledge-based assessment or task.

Details of these tasks will be in your interview invite email, and you will be able to ask the hiring manager any questions prior to the big day to allow you to best prepare.

The interview is your opportunity to get a proper feel for the college and find out more about the role. Make sure to ask plenty of questions so you can get a good idea of whether the job is the right next step for you.

Step 4: Offer

If your interview process is successful and both sides think it’s a good fit, we’ll make you a formal offer.

You will have seen a salary scale for each role listed in the advert and your offer will be on this scale.

The salary we offer will be based on your skills, experience and the pay awards of existing staff in the same or similar roles.

Be open with your expectations in the interview process. This allows us to understand what works for you while making sure we are being fair to our current team members.

If you accept our offer, we’ll then start your vetting and pre-employment checks. You can find out more about these under the ‘Safeguarding’ section of the careers page.

Step 5: Onboarding

We have lift off! Once your vetting is complete you will be ready to come aboard.

Your first couple of weeks with us will be jam-packed. You’ll properly meet the rest of your team as well as take part in a busy induction schedule.

As well as learning the ropes and familiarising yourself with the kind of environment we’re working to create, you’ll get to know your new colleagues. This includes a breakfast with our Principal and Chief Executive, Angela Foulkes along with other new starters.

This gives you a chance to introduce yourself and get to know the Executive Leadership team.
