About this Course

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree level or employment in the media production sector. The first year is focused on developing a broad base of media production knowledge and will allow you to explore different video based production modes such as short film, documentary and adverts. The second year will focus on your creative vision and progression and gives you the opportunity to produce a TV studio multi-camera production and short films. Throughout the programme there will be opportunities to take part in various trips to industry facilities and film festivals.

Key Units

Year 1
Introductory Phase: Units 1-4
During the first part of the course you will be introduced to various production processes and equipment. You will learn camera, sound recording and editing skills and be guided through the production of a short documentary and work as a team to produce a ‘How to…’ video.  Alongside this you will learn effective research and analytical skills that will inform your productions.

Exploration Phase: Unit 5, 6 & 7
These units will give you the opportunity to develop and explore the skills you’ve learnt in the introductory phase further through the production of a professional soundscape, a short moving image piece and interactive video work. This will involve learning industry standard audio mixing and edit software in Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro.

Final Major Project: Unit 8
You will work through the production of an advertising campaign. This unit takes you through the process of developing, pitching and producing a film idea with a specific audience and industry brief.

Year 2
The second year encourages the development of an idea that you are passionate about and allows you to focus on a specific production mode such as documentary, short film or TV programme. You will also explore your progression opportunities and develop your portfolio of work.

Unit 9, 10 & 11
These units give you the opportunity to create a short film on a specific genre, identify and engage with an audience while using multi-camera processes in the TV Studio. We’ll also get you thinking about what you want to do next, considering jobs and careers and producing a short showreel.

Unit 12
Allows you to take part in a specialist research project to prepare and inform your final project.

Unit 13
The Final Major Project will allow you to utilise all of the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained on the course to make your own short film.
