About this Course

The Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy programme, provides 16 - 19 year olds with a comprehensive initiative combining elite snooker coaching and vocational education. The programme aims to develop both snooker and academic skills to provide a platform for snooker players to reach towards elite level or develop their snooker skills whilst providing an opportunity to study towards vocational sport qualifications.

Key Units

As part of the Elite Snooker Sports programme at the college, students will have access elite snooker training as part of their academic week. Alongside studying towards a vocational sports qualification at the appropriate level to them.

The programme will give additional training and opportunities to access high quality facilities and coaching to help their development in their amateur careers or quest for a professional career in snooker.

Students will study towards relevant vocational qualifications alongside their snooker training with clear pathways provided into professional/amateur snooker, progression to university/higher education and pathways to employment in sport. Also, gaining valuable experience in academic areas such as sports coaching and leadership and sports officiating.

Alongside their studies will also have access to elite level snooker coaching, regular snooker participation, strength and conditioning sessions, video analysis of performance, physiotherapy for injuries and recovery.

Applicants that are accepted onto the Stephen Harrison Academy Programme, will have access to a wide range of vocational courses to study dependent on their incoming GCSE grades.

Entry Requirements

There are no set academic entry requirements as depending on incoming grades a vocational sports course is available for all applicants. Learners with the following grades can access the relevant vocational sports courses:
  • 4 GCSEs at Grade 1 or above - BTEC Level 1 in Sport and Active Leisure
  • 4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above - NCFE Level 2 in Sport
  • 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above - BTEC level 3 in Sports Coaching and Development
  • 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 and above (including Maths/English/Science) BTEC Level 3 in Sport and Exercise Science

Assessment

Vocational sport courses are generally 100% coursework based
*BTEC Level 3 in Sport and Exercise Science is 75% Coursework - 25% Exam
